Greetings
Our last event, a Night in the Village hosted by Roy's restaurant, was a great success. Thank you to everyone who participated, including our generous sponsors, partners in Third Street Village and the First Coast community. The celebration raised $42,000 for the foundation and its safety and child abuse prevention program, Speak Up Be Safe™. Over 400 guests enjoyed Hawaiian fusion cuisine by chef Roy Yamaguchi, tropical drinks and live fire dancing.
Speak Up Be Safe™ is a comprehensive, research-based, culturally and developmentally appropriate safety and child abuse prevention program. The universal education of children and the adults in their lives is the primary prevention strategy of Speak Up Be Safe™. For more information on the Speak Up Be Safe™ program, find us on Facebook, visit our website or read our new blog. It is the Monique Burr Foundation for Children's vision to provide the Speak Up Be Safe™ program to all elementary age children in Florida by 2015. |
|
The Pilot phase of our new safety and child abuse prevention education program was completed in June. Almost 20,000 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students in Clay, Duval, Hillsborough and Pasco counties successfully completed the program during the 2010-11 school year. Speak Up Be Safe™ will be released in an additional eight counties during the 2011-12 school year. Current plans call for the program to expand into Alachua, Gadsden, Leon, Liberty, Manatee, Nassau, St. Johns and Wakulla counties next. It is the Monique Burr Foundation for Children’s vision to provide the Speak Up Be Safe™ program to all elementary age children within the state of Florida by 2015.
The overall philosophy of the program focuses on keeping children safe by fostering communication and encouraging alliances between children, the adults in their lives and the community at large. Certified program facilitators are trained school personnel or volunteers. They engage children in meaningful learning experiences and teach age appropriate topics in a sensitive and supportive manner. The curriculum addresses important safety concerns facing children today including bullying, internet safety and child abuse prevention. The program also meets The Child Abuse Prevention Training Act of 1984 (Florida Statute 39), aligns with over 90 Florida Sunshine State Standards and supports the Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up For All Students Antibullying Act.
Facilitators involved in the Pilot phase had some very positive comments about the program:

The Monique Burr Foundation’s annual “A Night in the Village” event hosted at Roy’s Restaurant in Jacksonville Beach was a huge success! Hawaiian fusion cuisine by celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi, tropical drinks and live fire dancing set the scene where $42,000 was raised for the foundation and its new Speak Up Be Safe™ program.
“We had a great turnout at this year’s event with over 400 people in attendance and raised an extraordinary amount to help provide the new Speak Up Be Safe™ program for elementary students, parents/caregivers and school personnel throughout the region,” said Lynn Layton, executive director of the Monique Burr Foundation. “It is because of our generous sponsors, partners in Third Street Village and the First Coast community that this event was such a success.”
WJXT-TV anchor Bruce Hamilton was the master of ceremonies at “A Night in the Village.” The events included silent and live auctions and presentations by both Monique Burr Foundation founder Ed Burr and celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi. Special guest auctioneer M.G. Orender, president of Hampton Golf, presented the live auction, which included items such as a week’s stay at the Steamboat Grande and an opportunity for two to play in the Lexus Charity Golf Tournament in Pebble Beach, California. |
