Darkness to Light's (D2L) Stewards of Children
Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program
According to David Finkelhor, Director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, "It's important to teach adults the seriousness of sexual abuse of children and the long-lasting damage it can do to the child", he said. "And for children, use preventive education to teach them that if someone touches them inappropriately, or takes images of them, they shouldn't be afraid to speak up about it".
Monique Burr Foundation for Children, Inc. and Children's Safe Passage, Inc. have partnered to offer the Stewards of Children program in Jacksonville, FL and throughout Florida.
Stewards of Children is a child sexual abuse prevention program for adults by the national organization, Darkness to Light, a nonprofit headquartered in Charleston, SC whose mission is to empower people to prevent child sexual abuse. Stewards of Children is the only national, evidenced-based program that teaches adults how to prevent child sexual abuse and has over 8 years of outcomes including over 3500 trained facilitators internationally, hundreds of community and statewide initiatives throughout the US, and research showing 1 adult will better protect 10 children.
Is necessary for all adults since 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday;
Is designed for use by schools, youth-serving organizations, and all adults concerned about the safety of children;
Is provided by an authorized facilitator using a compelling DVD with stories and guidance from sexual abuse survivors, experts and other concerned adults, integrated with an interactive workbook and facilitator led discussion;
Takes only 2 1⁄2 hours to teach adults 7 steps to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse;
Is cost effective for organizations and individuals with a minimal $10 per person materials cost.
